Upper School News

Good News!
It is no surprise that we have a great math program, as well as many other strong academic programs. However, did you know that last school year, we had 17 students take the AP Calculus AB exam; of those 17, the average exam score was a 4.35 out of 5? In the state of Virginia, students who took this same exam only received an average score of 3.03. Nationally, only 8.14% of students received a perfect score of 5. Comparatively, 64.7% of NCS students scored a perfect 5 out of 5 on the AP Calculus AB exam!

Community Chat Follow Up
Thank you all for your partnership as we walk in stride with you to raise Ambassadors for Christ. Healthy, positive conversation is one key way that we can partner with you. For those who were not able to attend our Community Chat, I hope that you will enjoy the notes we have compiled from the evening and sent in the Upper School News email on 10/11.  Remember, you can see a lot of great things that are happening at the school through Facebook and Instagram but remember not to spend too much time on social media ;).  See notes to understand.

NHS & NJHS Canned Food Drive
The National Honor Society and National Junior Honor Society are hosting a canned food drive to benefit our area Salvation Army.  Please send in as many canned food items/non-perishable items as you are led to send to the English class. The grade level that collects the most items will win a Krispy Kreme donut lunch treat.  The event is running from October 15-October 26. Our school wide goal is 1000 items, so please be as generous as you can during this season of giving.

National Geographic Bee
This year 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students will be competing in the National Geographic Bee. The preliminary round occurs in their classes in November.  Students are being sent home with a practice packet tomorrow, so please be on the lookout. On the back of the packet is important information to help you and your child prepare.  Also, download the GeoBee Challenge app on your device or your child's device for fun practice questions. Check out nationalgeographic.org/bee/study as another way to connect and practice.  Those who qualify will be in the school bee in January and one winner will qualify for the state competition.

NCS Summer Trips
Applications and initial deposit are due 10/31!!!**
**Applications are available outside Mrs. Lister’s office.

CHINA (Led by Mrs. Heider & Mr. & Mrs. Tucker) - Thursday, June 6- Monday, June 17

  • Approximate cost - $3,300 ($3,050 if you already have a visa!).  The China trip is an amazing opportunity to be the hands and feet of Jesus to some very special kids!  The team will have the chance to live and serve at a Beijing foster home. We will play with the children who live there and do work projects for the home.  We will have the chance to visit the Great Wall (with a really cool toboggan ride down from the top!), Tiananmen Square, and the Forbidden City.

VIETNAM (Led by Mrs. Sansalone) - Wednesday, June 5 - Sunday, June 16

  • Approximate cost $3,500.  We will be going into an impoverished orphanage in Hanoi and hosting a three day summer camp there. We also treat some of the older orphans to an overnight trip where they get to experience a little slice of heaven that will hopefully give them hope for a better future! You will experience a culture unlike anything else in the world with beautiful sights, native people and interesting foods!

SOUTH AFRICA (Led by Mrs. Richter & Mrs. Bresnahan)- Saturday, June 8 - Sunday, June 23

  • Approximate cost - $2,800.  The South Africa team works with a missions organization called Abba's Pride, which was started by a family who is originally from Virginia Beach.  We do some training in their church in Pretoria, and then we live in a nearby village for the first week - sleeping at a school and working in the community.  The second week, we stay in host homes and go out with the missionary team to other smaller villages and help out in their pre-schools, work on playground equipment, paint, or deliver food.  At the end of that second week, we get to enjoy some tourist highlights like a Lion Park, a Game Drive (safari), and an African Market.

ISRAEL (Led by Mr. V & Ms. Posch)- Thursday, June 27- Monday, July 8

***PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS TRIP IS NOT CONSIDERED A MISSIONS TRIP AND IS NOT ELIGIBLE FOR CHARITABLE GIVING TAX CREDIT ***

  • Approximate cost - $4,300.  On the Israel trip we will have the chance to learn both the biblical/ancient history of Israel along with its modern counterpart. We will learn about the different cultures and religions that are within Israel and see many of the amazing Holy sites. We will have a chance to enjoy some of the best things that Israel has to offer in terms of food, both high society and everyday street food, to the adventures, from swimming and hiking to camel rides through the desert. The trip will also incorporate a few ministry opportunities.
