The Elizabeth “Betty” K. Jones Memorial Scholarship
Elizabeth “Betty” K. Jones Memorial Scholarship was established by husband Charlie, son Wes, and grandson Gunnar, to honor the memory of Betty by promoting the education of alumni or graduating seniors of Norfolk Christian Schools.
When Wes attended Norfolk Christian Schools, Betty was a classroom mother on several occasions, continually praying for the needs of the school, teachers, families and student body. Betty was a prayer warrior. During the early 1960s, Betty tutored unwed mothers at the Florence Crittenton Home, allowing them to keep up with high school courses. Her sensitivity to helping others was the driving force behind her desire to become a nurse.
Betty graduated with Honors from Old Dominion University School of Nursing in Norfolk, Virginia. Through her life, Betty always carried a heart to provide for the poor and less fortunate. Her kindness and caring always prevailed even though many times her selfless giving left her without. Her comment was, “My Lord always provides.” And He did.
Betty practiced as a nurse at the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughter and later at the clinic at St. Vincent DePaul Hospital, both in Norfolk. Betty embodied kindness, caring and compassion and became affectionately known to many of her patients as “Miss Betty”. After serving 26 years in several departments, she retired from St. Vincent DePaul but continued to volunteer in the Norfolk Free Medical Clinic.
Betty taught Sunday school and led Bible studies for the Christian Women’s Club and was an active member of the Sharing Circle for Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughter. She touched so many lives in the community. Betty was welcomed home on January 28, 2016, by her Lord, Jesus Christ, whom she loved and shared in her lifetime.
Who is eligible to apply
The scholarship will be awarded on a competitive basis each year to an NCS alumna/us or current graduating senior who meets the following criteria:
- A 3.2 GPA or higher and is in good standing with their current academic institution.
- Has applied and been accepted to an institution offering post-secondary education studies and fully intends to earn a post-secondary bachelor of science in nursing degree. The student is responsible for notifying NCS when this occurs.
- Online RN to BSN programs do not qualify. The student must attend class in a face-to-face format.
- Elizabeth “Betty” K. Jones Memorial nursing scholars are expected to conduct themselves in a way that brings honor to themselves, Norfolk Christian Schools and above all, Jesus Christ and may be immediately terminated should the student be dismissed from their program for academic or disciplinary reasons.
What does the scholarship cover?
The 2022 scholarship award payment of $2,500 will be paid directly to a student’s tuition account at a 4-year college or university where the student has been accepted into the bachelor of science in nursing program.
