All great art is the expression of man’s delight in God’s work, not his own.
The elementary art program is divided into four key parts: visual communication and production, cultural context and art history, judgment and criticism, and aesthetics.
The content for kindergarten serves as building blocks for further visual arts instruction. The course places emphasis on cognitive, affective, sensory, and motor development using a problem-solving approach. Students learn that art is a personal expression, has value, teaches about other times and places, and connects in important ways to other areas of learning. Students understand that their works of art are unique and valuable as self-expressions.
The content for first grade continues to emphasize that the visual arts are about ideas. Development continues in cognitive, sensory, affective, and motor domains. Standards continue to emphasize the language of art. Art production focuses on increased communication, self-expression, and the depiction of stories and events. Students learn that people have different responses to the visual arts.
Second grade focuses on the acquisition of a reservoir of ideas for art making. Students acquire ideas from their own experiences, their school, their communities, the environment, and the art of other cultures. Students express these ideas using an increasing variety of art materials, skills, techniques, and processes.
In third grade, the curriculum emphasizes learning through inquiry. Students examine aspects of the artistic process: idea generation, problem solving, and self-assessment. Students investigate the integral role of art within different culture, and they combine knowledge of art and design, effective artistic processes and skills, and a variety of ideas to produce works of art.
Students in fourth grade continue to study the elements of art and the principles of design as the basic building blocks for art appreciation and production. Students explore a range of materials and subject matter. Emphasis is on the importance of drawing skills and depicting a three dimensional object on a two dimensional surface. Students examine the difference between abstract and realistic art.
The curriculum for fifth grade enables students to use their knowledge and skills to synthesize information, thus allowing them to produce and respond to works of art. Emphasis is on communication of personal values and beliefs in art appreciation and production. Students study architecture, industrial design, and graphic design. Students gain fluency in the use and understanding of the elements of art and the principles of design as they relate to artistic expression and communication.
An after school program, Art Club offers instruction one afternoon a week for students in grades 3 – 5. Students learn some foundation artistic media and experience the creative elements of artistic design.
Art 7 is a semester elective course. Students use and recognize the elements of design, (line, shape, form, space, value, color, texture). More time is also spent in Art History and students are enabled to begin looking at art critically.
This elective course is a semester class that is a basic introduction to the elements and principles (pattern, movement, unity, emphasis, balance, contrast, rhythm) of art and design. The application of these elements, principles and the basic artistic skills of drawing, painting, and sculpture will be given extensive formal practice and experimentation. A variety of techniques and media are utilized and introductions to art history and art criticism are incorporated during the course.
Art I Grades 9-12
Students gain experience in creative self-expression using a variety of art materials and techniques. They also use the Elements and Principles of Art, receive an overview of major art styles, learn how to critique a work of art and make informed judgments from a Biblical worldview. Emphasis is on studio art production, with a combination of directed and self-selected activities.
Art II Grades 10-12
Students review the basics of Art I, and then continue to expand their skills and study of various art materials, techniques and concepts with increasing originality and self- direction. They also begin to build an art portfolio. They learn to express in written form their concept of a Christian worldview toward art.
Art III Grades 11-12
Students continue to expand and refine their skills and study of concepts learned in Arts I and II, while pursuing a variety of independent projects. They develop an art portfolio that includes both 2- and 3- dimensional work. They learn to express in written form their concept of a Christian worldview toward art in contrast to other secular worldviews. Students are encouraged to enter competitions and exhibitions, and must prepare at least one original work for entry
