All great art is the expression of man’s delight in God’s work, not his own.
The instrumental music program at Norfolk Christian Schools offer a full spectrum of outstanding instruction in a competitive, yet fun and encouraging environment to grow in! Students of the band program embrace a common unity and goal that embrace nothing less than ‘excellence’ and pursue peak performance!
We strive to share the Gospel, all the while growing very talented progressive young musicians! We are thrilled to offer the following Instrumental Music programs at Norfolk Christian:
Grade 6 Band
The sixth grade beginning band is a semester elective that all students at Norfolk Christian will have the opportunity to participate in! Similar to the lower school beginning band, this class is unique in that all students in the 6th grade have the opportunity to participate. Additional rehearsals and separate track are offered for those students who participated in the Lower School band the previous year, and who have shown more developed musical skill.
Grade 7 Band
The seventh grade band is a year-long elective group, and is the second year intermediate student who desires to excel at the next level in instrumental music. Throughout the year of study, students are taught how to practice, participate in private instruction, and perform for two Norfolk Christian School concerts and community concerts as well. Students in this band find a great year of growth on their instrument, and is used as a tremendous opportunity to prepare students for their high school band experience!
Advanced Band Programs
Concert Band Grades 8-12
The Ambassador High School Concert Band is the high school performing ensemble, emphasizing technical development. Musicians are taught to recognize and have a clear understanding of the musical expressions and interpretations expected from a given piece of music. A student’s progress is reflected in his or her ability to perform and interpret musical selections correctly. The Concert Band performs frequently as a pep band in 2008 at NCS football games, basketball games, spirit assemblies, local performances in malls and other performance venues. The concert band performs a regular Fall and Spring school concert. The band is particularly very active in the Spring semester, participating in small ensemble and solo contests, spring performance festivals and contests, school concerts, District events, and even Virginia State level events. The Spring semester culminates in a great 4-5 day Spring Tour/Trip that the band takes. It is a fantastic way to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and to use music as the tool God gave our students to accomplish this! The band has participated in a trip to New York City two years in a row, and is making planning preparations for the Spring, 2009 Trip/Tour already!
Ambassador Jazz Band Grades 7-12
The Jazz Ensemble is an elite audition group made up of students from the concert band. Participation in Concert Band is a general prerequisite, with exception to those who the guitar, bass guitar, drum set, and keyboard/piano. This ensemble is one of Norfolk Christian Schools’ ambassador performing ensembles, and are for those who are interested in the study and experience of jazz music. The ensemble performs for chapels, community events, fall and spring concerts, annual Capital Campaign Banquet, luncheons, evening engagements, and auction/telethons. The Jazz Ensemble performs at festivals and in their first contest ever in the Winter, 2009. The Jazz Ensemble tours locally, performs for prestigious events on a frequent basis, and performs with the High School Concert Band.
Drum Line Grades 8-12
The Norfolk Christian High School Band will be adding for the first time ever a Drum-Line to our school’s performing ensembles. Students that participate in this awesome and impressive ensemble will be selected from the peforming percussionists enrolled in our High School Concert Band. Isolated exceptions can be made. This ensemble performs with the pep band at home football games, basketball games, and other community events. The group will be the first segment added in the Fall, 2008, to help prepare for our 2009 launch of Marching Band at Norfolk Christian School.
